am new and in need of CMMS program for plant|

I never had to deal with the actual purchasing portion so to speak until now since I spent 10 years in the Marines and they already had one that was standardly used. Unfortunately, the plant that I now work for has no clue what organization is really and wants me to find an inexpensive program to use. So far, I find myself leaning towards Smart Maintenance(www.smartwaregroup.com) and Manager Plus(www.managerplus.com)for my programs. They are both inexpensive, but have the ability to be networked inside the plant, have barcode capability, and have a descent purchase/inventory section from the looks of things. Would anyone have any other suggestions? Needs to be around $10k or so to be in the running.

are you talking about licence fees only or about the cost for the whole stuff ? The cost for the licence fee is only a small amount of the whole implementation for a CMMS. But before thinking about buying a CMMS: - are the (new) processes defined ? - are the requirements (reports, KPIs, ...) Do this first ! Otherwise you will only compare a lot of features from a lot of CMMS. That a bad job. After you have done this you will find a lot of CMMS that fullfill all requirements. So which one to choose ? That depends on much more than the fee: - How long do you expect the CMMS to run (I have seen requirements of 20+ years !) - Which complexity of software are you able to manage (special IT departement, ...) - What knowledge is available in your company, what do you have to buy ? |

The guys that will be using the program to sometimes initiate the work orders(production workers) will need to have as easy a program as I can find for them to use. As for myself and my maintenance guys, I have a good feeling that the program doesn't have to be so simplistic. We're mainly looking to get a program that will use about 5 concurrent users with unlimited nonconcurrent users available I believe it was. Pretty much everyone will be able to log on, but I am only going to let there be 4 to 5 at a time actually in it. Now I have a question for you; being that I have never had to do any of this research before, I would prefer to make sure I understand your statements. Any reports, in comparison to the nonexistence thereof, would be an improvement so no worries there. However, would you elaborate a bit on the processes? Not exactly sure what you're referring to. Lastly, we intend to use it for as long as corporate will let us or until we find it more useful to go with another program. Also, I am not sure about the knowledge level of the IT guys over at corporate, but let's hope they know something or I am screwed...hahaha.

How many assets are you planning to manage with the program? Are you looking for a program that is going to “do it all”? Equipment hierarchy, PM’s /PdM’s, work orders, inventory management? You said you are ex govvie so I know that maintenance is a top priority. Is the company you work for now interested in preventive maintenance like the gov’t?

I think Cworks is free if I remember correctly.
As a minimum, insist to be able to capture cost of manpower, materials & services via work order. Sometimes, for so called simplicity, only labour is captured in the work order but not spare parts and services. The last two are ordered using hardcopy paper forms, outside the cmms! |
