Seems you have had some leadership or failure to "sell" issues in the past. I have found taking personal ownership makes all the difference in the world. Great to share you experience and have you on the team. We deal here with a classical reason of why a project could fail. This has nothing to do with my personal experience. Important is to recognize and overcome it. The delay with this exercise was actually expected based on the forum, distance/ time zones, time of year (most Americans will be on vacation for the next 10 days and the past 2 weeks have been very busy at home and at work.) and the fact that this is a "hobby" exercise not a job. Agree, this counts also for me. I whish everyone all the best for 2008. |

Hello Tone J,
Welcome on the forum. Please start with the start of this topic for reference. Send a email to rcm2study@gmail.com and Introduce yourself. I will send you an invite to the online RCM information worksheet and send you the introduction of the other team members. We are landed to the step of adding failure effects. Looks like you're the early Christmas present and I hope others stand up to contribute and make this a good learning experience for all. Regards, Rogier. |

Johnny, I appreciate feedback but this is not clear to me, what do you mean here? Well, instead of "hummm", I could have: <scratching my head, not sure what to say but wanting to keep things positive>. Good point and I agree on all. Moving on, please. I do still need the "ground-rule" on how to express effects. Earlier, I stated I am used to 3 levels of effects. How should we structure effects for this exercise? I don't know that I will do much more on this project this year as my vacation starts today, or tomorrow, or the next day (depending on what else happens). |

We could follow this template. Ideally a description of effects needs to start off with what the operator would see in the event of said failure eg: for failure mode 1A1: Burnt out motor effect could be:
Tachometer alarm sounds in control room. Fan stopped. Operator checks fan and finds thermistors tripped. Informs electrician who repairs.(this is only guess - would need to ask Steve what virtual procedure was). Repair time: X hours Downtime: X hours Spares: Thermistors Costs: (of replacement component) MTBF: (or failing precise info an estimate or matrix could be developed using occurence vs impact and using a rating such as c for critical down to l for low.) This should give us most of the info we need to work on our next step - the decision diagram. Mike. |

Sorry for obvoius question if been covered before.
Is there a PM already in place for this asset. Is there a planned maintenance window? What is the criticality of this asset? |

Hi Tone J,
The case study is presented in this forum on the 10th September. You can get lots of the details there. Rgds Steve |

Great to have you on board Tone - you're not far from me (Wellington).
I see the farmers are happy and will be spending up large this Xmas on the extra milk solids pay out! Good for Manawatu. Mike. |
||||

Yep Mike prices are up so farmers very happy in NZ.
OK caught up with the brief (thanks Steve). What history do we have on the asset? What can I do to help with the next step? |

Tone J,
We have some good data in parts but not in others. This is a typical scenario. Suggest you guys let me know when and where you wana start and I will post the data that is relevent. Rgds Steve |
||||

I think we should start now. As to where, I will take your guys lead, but something easyish so we can get a good model.

I'd to share our plant experience some FM
- Belt broken due to water spray - Our plant has to temporary increase rate of air cooled by spray water into the Fan. It make often belt broken. So, now we erect the guard to protect belt....it can help us to expand TTF. If my share is stupid, plese forget it. Hi Guy's,
Short message to let you know that this topic nor me is dead I was very buzzy after the party days moving two family members to new houses. At this moment I am catched by the flu and wettening my keyboard. I am certain we can make a jumpstart begin next week. Regards, Rogier |

Happy New Year everyone - I'm still here too.

A virtual discussion and analysis example on RCM is indeed possible and presents an excellant subject matter. One very large problem that I see, is that our presentation material tends to be sales oriented, i.e. "My approach is better.", and that should not be one of the goals of this type of discussion or be seen to be allowed by an origanization such as reliabilityweb.com. Jack Nicholas has for years presented the most open and non-sales oriented approach to explaining RCM and examining the numerious methodologies, all the while avoiding selling or bashing one style or the other. To be truly succesful any discussion on RCM needs to be educational: explaining both its benefits and nonbenefits, examining approaches that work in general and then in specific circumstances; thus opening up discussions on how much RCM is enough and how much is too much, and making sure to present that "doing" RCM is like viewing and iceberg - the anlaysis is only the tip with the greatest portion of the cost and effort, implementation, hidden below.
After all that, I would be pleased to add my knowledge and expertize to this effort. I have materials that I would be willing to share. On the subject of "doing" an RCM analysis on-line, it can be done and I along with my colleagues have done it; again it needs to simple enough to complete and instructional enought to be useful. I am sure that I have materail that would lend itself to such an undertaking. Glenn Hinchcliffe Asset Performance Technologies, Inc. 505-856-0825 ghinchcliffe@assetperformanceinc.com |

Glenn,
Happy to have you aboard. Help kick start us. In case you haven't noticed, there is no discussion of "my flavor of RCM is better", only, what is best in the case we are working. (I did explain what I am used to seeing/ doing, so I could understand the format for this effort). I believe this effort is agreed "straight RCM II". We should be working effects now, but since the Christmas break it's been tough getting going. I know I am terribly swamped and may not have much more to put in for a while. Best Regards: |

Welcome to the forums. I will echo Johnny and advise that you read all past 8 pages of posts. There has been remarkable cooperation and none of the old style "mine is better" in this project. Take some time and get up to speed. Rogier will be posting the next phase soon. Terry O |

Gentlemen.
I have been following the proceedings on this thread with keen interest. How ever, I note that things have somewhat cooled off. In some other reading, I came across the definition for RCM as a Resource Consuming Monster. Has this virual exercise consumed our expert's zeal to complete the exercise. It would be most unfortunate if this were so, for this was a great educational exercise. If it is that our experts have busy schedules and that they are being bogged down mundane preliminary work in data gathering, I would humbly propose that a twinning arrangement between those lead practitioners and beginners would help see the project to completion. If,we the beginners would be mentored by the lead practitioners in attending to gathering the data under their direction, they in turn will be responsible for analysing and intepreting the same, putting it to use and completing this exercise. I do not know how others feel, but I am willing to do my part in completig this exercise, as I see the benefits accruing therefrom Ecky |

Hi Ecky,
It looks like things have cooled off. When I get a moment, I will see if I can inject some life. Just not now - I am preparing for the RCM 2008 conference in Vegas. Sharpening my card counting skills. Hows Zimbabwe - I was borm there but left before I was school age. Rgds Steve |

Steve
Except for having the dubious double distinction of claiming the world record for the highest inflation in a non-warring country and getting into the headlines for all the wrong reasons, Zimbabwe is okay. I am happy that we still have people who are commited to seeing the virtual analysis completed. It was and still is a greatlearning tool. Ecky |

Hello people,
Apologies for having slowed down this study at start of a new year I exceeded my personal operating envelope and needed some time to get work and personal stuff back on track. I am happy to see that there is still response to the forum so I am certain we can update and finish this case study. I received several mails from people wanted to contribute. I updated the Information worksheet to V4.1 with Failure Effects received from Alfredo Latero. Information worksheet 4.1 Alfredo many thanks Ecky great to have you on board for support, please send an email to rcm2study@gmail.com for a invite to update the google doc online. Glenn Hinchcliffe it would be nice if you can add your knowledge and expertise to this study with sharing material in doing on-line RCM analysis. Please send me an email. Regards, Rogier |
