Hi All
In the well known book by Anthony M. Smith and Glenn R. Hinchcliffe, RCM—GATEWAY TO WORLD CLASS MAINTENANCE, p. 8-9, there was a criticism of TPM. I cannot recall but at some othe rplace, I remember that I read about a competition between RCM and TPM. This sounds bizzare to me as TPM is the inclsuion of operational resources to Maintenance Process and RCM is all about determination of the maintenance strategies, why should these contradict each other? A company can prepare the maintenance strategies based on RCM and application of the strategies can be done in accordance with TPM. May I ask you gurus' opinions please. Cheers |

gtheodry,
IMHO, you are absolutely right. My view is that TPM changes the way people behave. That has a significant impact on reliability. Discipline in doing the planned work on time is also a major contributor to reliability. Behaviour influences discipline. RCM identifies the right work to do, and the right time to do it, as well as the steps to follow. But if you don't do this work on time (i.e. discipline + resources) to the right quality (i.e. competence, motivation and behaviour), we do not give RCM a fair chance to succeed. That is why I think TPM should precede RCM, and that one does not make the other redundant. Hello,
RCM is well used to define the best maintenance approach to go with, often depend on equipment criticality. Criticality analysis and risk assessment must be carried out when using RCM. Basically, you should have TPM before considering to update to RCM. TPM relays most on preventive maintenance and autonomous maintenance. RCM promote the use of predictive maintenance methods (vibration, thermograph, oil analysis, ultrasound...etc). What makes RCM higher performance than TPM is that it include all PdM approachs as a tool for reliability success. British Petroleum, NASA, and others relay only on RCM. In my opinion, TPM is for normal industries not critical & heavy ones (time=money) plus it is suitable for all companies. The company that find TPM not sufficient for their needs, should switch to RCM. Hope this help Mohammed |
