Hello, I am trying to find if there is alternate technology to crack detection in castings and forgings. Do you know of any? Please post links or details here in the forum. Thanks, Mike |

Mike,
If you are manufacturing many identical parts, then the vibration natural frequency method can be used to detect cracks by changes in natural frequency. If you are testing only one or a few parts, then ultrasound, magnetic-particle, or x-ray methods may be more appropriate. Walt w_f_strong [at] msn [dot] com |

2nd half of this article describes various technologies for crack detection in castings:
http://www.automotiverebuilder.com/ar/eb90652.htm There are also some new visual inspection systems using LabVIEW Vision that can see cracks as small as 100 micrometers in width. I've read that digital radiography is up and coming for NDT inspection. |

Terry,
Do you have any feedback or more info on whether Mike is seeking a vibration solution or other NDE method? Walt |

Other NDE Methods Walt.

There are applications of using thermal imaging to detect discontinuities in sold objects (heat on one side; TI camera on the other).
I suspect this technology would have limitations for small cracks BUT, if you have access to one - try it Jim P |

Terry,
So what NDE methods have been tried, and what was the problem with them. What is Mike looking for in crack detection that common NDE methods are not satisfactory? Walt |
