Just wondering what NDE technologies are being used today regarding the inspection of turbine blades for cracks. Specifically testing the L-0 and L-1 rows with the LP rotor in place. I have collected vibration bump test data but don't at this time have a high degree of confidence in making a call. If anyone has had any success testing blades in place using technologies other than dye penetrant and mag particle, I would like to hear your feedback. Thanks, TC

You just shot my answer down with your last comment. When with (GE)we invariably used Mag particle for iron base blades (steam turbines) and Zyglo for non magnetic (gas turbine) blades.
One of the advantages using mg particle is that you check out the whole assembly, blades, roost, shrouds etc. all in one go. I have been out of the business for a few years so there may well be something new has come along. |
