Great thread. I guess I am a little slow, this is my first time to visit this thread. I caught the tail end of the old board and have been a member of the new one since its inception. I am coming up on five years of vibration analysis as an every day job but started balancing in an electric motor shop in 1979. I too have lugged the IRD 880 around and prior to that the IRD 350. We also used the 345 in our balance stand. We have come a long way, haven't we.
I live in Pensacola FL and work out of Saraland AL for a large motor shop. If I had a picture to post, it would be like Terry's only I would move the eye or should I say eyes as in three in ten years a little closer. But all things said, I love living in Pensacola. There is a lot of water around and fishing at times is really good. We get kidded around here about living in LA, Lower Alabama. But Pensacola really is in FL, barely. I would say I play the guitar but instead I will just say I own one. Thanks to all who keep this forum alive, Ronnie |

Regards to all from Ankara, Turkey! Only 30 minutes to the tomb of King Midas of Lydians, 1 hr to the ancient region of Philadelphia, 3 hrs to the town where Julius Caesar remarked "Veni, Vidi, Vici!" and only 4hrs to where Carthagian Hannibal died in misery (and the list goes on!)...
OLI, Howard Penrose and many familiar faces and names, I am here too.(By the way where is Arne?) 20 some years in vibration engineering and I still run to work every morning with the same enthusiasm of the first day at work. My small company VibraTek is now serving the world at large (thanks to a lot of grey hair that has replaced my shiny dark ones!) Come next Saturday (May 6th) I am flying to Monte Carlo, Monaco to give a talk on ship vibrations and do a workshop in addition to losing hopefully a miniscule part of my hard earned money in casinos, if they allow paupers in. (Oh darn somebody has to do this job!) I will tromp around where Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot once did the same. (Say Howard, you thought you like to brag!) Excuse me guys, I just couldn't resist the temptation. As for talents: none exists that is worth mentioning. I am incurably jelaous of those folks that play the guitar, the banjo or what have you. Total idiot I am, when it comes to decoding music although I was a one time member of the American Cryptogram Association (handle: Turkish Delight). Then I was also member of the American Short Wave Listeners Club tweaking the knobs of my shortwave radio to tune in Radio Zimbabwe or All India Radio. Owe my basic training to the great school called DLI Engineering with emphasis on US Navy aircraft carriers and other such toys. My former career of designing offshore oil platforms easily had left its place to vibration engineering. Now I do a lot of industrial and marine vibration, acoustics, oil analysis etc consulting in addition to marketing highly respected P/PM products which I will refrain from mentioning. I have a crew of six people that is generally not sufficient to cover all jobs asked of us. One last remark: older board was better! One more remark: I am sure this board will feel better if I use it more. Regards Ibrahim H Caglayan, PhD Ankara TURKEY ibrahim3i(at)yahoo.com or ibrahim.caglayan(at)vibratek.com.tr |

I'm from Cape Town, South Africa. I got involved in PM straight outta varisty. I'm now 28, and still loving it. I'm lucky in that I work on a web based system, doing detection and diagnosis on machines located worldwide, without leaving my desk. Being a small company I work closely with our production and field service departments, which keeps me in touch with our instumentation. In the last year or so we moved into the area of providing condition monitoring services for cranes. It's great in that production cranes are invariably 100% critical and can present a SERIOUS safety risk. Personally I enjoy studying (doing another degree for kicks) and sportsbikes (Itallian preferably). The PM industry in South Africa is quite immature, so its great to hear from other people with good experiance and skills.

Haven't been on this board in a while and was pleased to see this topic show up again. I live in the beautiful panhandle of Florida (Gulf Breeze)but find myself rarely there. I guess this is the price I pay to live in Paradise. Married for 20+ years with 3 wonderful kids. Enjoy fishing, motorcycling, soccer and my work. Been involved with PdM and reliability for 15 years and learn something new everyday.

Greetings everyone,
I too was on the old thread, so and thought it was neat to learn a little about all the names you see on the different posts. I have been on the selling end of the pdm business for the last 12 years, working for one of the larger manuf rep firms in the US. Last year I got the itch to try it myself, so in Jan of '05 I made the plunge. You know you are always thinking if I ran this operation I would do it this way, so now I can. Coming up on 25 years of marriage and about to get my youngest off to LSU, Geaux Tigers. Interests are golf, high school football and LSU sports. marty@sereliability.com |

Hi I'm Rennie. I live on a small island in the centre of the Mediterrenean Sea called Malta. I've been working in maintenance since my graduation for the last 14 years. I'm 39, married with two children:boy 4, girl 7.
I did vibrations during my undergraduate and used it in the beginning when I worked in a power station. Since then I did not have the opportunity to really go deep into it except for my studies at Masters level. For the last 5 years been working in the pharmaceutical industry but still trilled when I get close to something rotating. That's my wish for the future..to get involved in vibration monitoring and PdM technologies but need to look outside the country since industry is small on the island, however we're very close to south mainland Europe and north Africa. |

What a fantastic spectrum - of people, interests and places... About a 1000 years of cumulative experience on this board. Why go somplace else to learn about vibrations...
Many more from the old board yet to jump in... Deepak, from Mangalore India (On the west coast - 74.5 E, 12.5 N). 4000mm of rain, 6 months of heat & dust... Vibrations, Reliability, Rotating Machinery Maintenance, Commissioning of Turbines, Compressors in a Refinery for the past 13 years... 35 Years old (who wouldn't be in this field), Married, 2 Boys. Astronomy, Bird Watching (the winged variety), Motorsport, SF & Fantasy buff... Regards, Deepak |

I have been living in Louisiana for the past 20 years, but my roots are in Texas. I spent 15 years wandering in the construction industry, then the next 16 years in a paper mill as a maintenance grunt with 9 of those 16 years in vibration analysis. Every day in the Reliability field reminds me of how little I know and how much there is to learn.

Great to see such vibrant characters, who are involved in boring maintenance activities...HaHaHa!
I hail from Malaysia, and have been involved in the predictive maintenance world since 1979, predominantly in the Oil & Gas industries. Have worked in Malaysia, Borneo and Canada and travelled to many countries. I can proudly say that it has been a pleasant challenge working in the PdM field, which has allowed me to meet great people. Enjoy playing squash, being creative in pottery/painting/wood carving and exploring spirituality. I am 51 years old, married with 2 young adult children and many pets; living in Mississauga, Canada. Best regards...Rajan |

Interesting thread. I've been in the vibration testing field since 1981, an independant consultant since 1998. Been fortunate to have worked from Montreal to Mexico with lots of great people. Married for 23 years, 3 kids, none interested in engineering. Hobbies include racing cars and I play bass/guitar in a band.
Thanks to all that contribute to this forum, it's great. ![]() |

Like most others I enjoyed this thread on the old board. I haven't been around the board much during 2006 due to some overwhelming circumstances that just didn't leave time, so I have missed the banter! I got started in machinery maintenance growing up on a dairy farm in Minnesota. Late 70's was the time I got started in vibration and acoustics (after finishing engineering school), while doing testing for one of our nations naval submarine shipbuilders. Continued marine/naval oriented vibration test and analysis for nearly 10 years. All tape recorders and large FFT analyzers and charge mode accelerometers (except for the General Radio and IRD swept filter analyzers for balancing and Navy nuclear pump testing...). Got to do my initial work with programming pre-PC desktop computers to control and automate test sequences on the FFT analyzers during this time.
I then was fortunate to begin working for Technical Associates where my exposure to commercial processes was significantly broadened. Through the consulting and seminar teaching at TA of Charlotte (5 years) I met many people and traveled a lot, which I had also done in the marine industry. I learned a lot at TA of Charlotte and I am grateful for my time there. Spent 4 years working with a on-line vibration company developing, selling and training. World wide. Primarily paper industry. Lived in Singapore and Australia, worked in many countries all around the world. Started my own vibration analysis company in 1999 and moved from congested, hectic, northern Virginia (Washington, DC suburbs) to beautiful rural central Virginia on a small lake where my wife and I and 2 teenage daughters enjoy boating, skiing, fishing , etc. I have an airplane which enjoy using to travel to my consulting jobs which are in many different locations around the country (especially post 9/11). As a family we are very involved in church activities, especially music and teaching. I play the bass guitar (at least I do my best, some might not consider it playing...). I am a licensed aircraft mechanic and I enjoy working on airplanes and am a partner in a flight school with 2 airplanes, (soon to be a flight instructor). We are also a factory authorized dealer for new airplanes (Thorp T211) in the Light Sport Airplane category (2 seaters). I have really enjoyed the challenge of machinery diagnostics over the years. I also enjoy some of the jobs I get involved in that are oriented toward making quieter products and solving noise and vibration problems in buildings. This board has been a great resource and even after nearly 30 years of involvement in this field and being 50 years old. While I prefer to be a "lone ranger" in my consulting business, I do recognize the value of getting multiple perspectives and drawing on other's experience. I am fortunate to have met some of the contributors to this forum over the years. God Bless, and thanks for all your contributions. Skip Hartman |

Hello y'all. Just wanted to double the female responses to this post. My name is Shelley Whitener, originally from Blountville, TN. I now live near Albuquerque, NM. While getting my ME degree from the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) quite a few years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to co-op in the Machinery Analysis group at Eastman Chemical Co. and was mentored by Ken Singleton, who taught me very much about vibration analysis. I was hooked from then on. Since college I have worked as a plant engineer, maintenance supervisor, manufacturing engineer, packaging engineer, and a reliability engineer. My employers have been Eastman, Maytag, L'Oreal, and now Sandia National Labs. I'm not an expert in any of the predictive maintenance technologies, but I have tried to learn enough to know where to apply them. This message board has been a tremendous resource. My passion (at work) is RCM, and I am very fortunate to be an RCM2 facilitator at Sandia. I have been married 14 years and have two precious boys, ages 6 and 2. I love watching baesball and college football.
Thanks to everyone for contributing to the topics on this message board! Shelley Whitener |

I don't often get to this board, so I'm glad I caught this thread. I've ofter wondered who all you genius's were! I've been in the vibe field for only 3 years, so I'm constantly amazed by the wealth of knowledge I see in these posts. I've been in-house, doing vibration, ultrasound and infrared on mostly small motors and pumps. Our largest monitored equipment are 700 hp ammonia compressors. I hope to contribute something of value someday. Right now, I'm just trying to get better. Thank you all for your help!!!

Wow! Just got back to the board. Was on the "old one" since sometime in 90's. Browsing through a few posts I can see familiar names.....man, it feels good!
OK, Atlanta now though rarely work here. Spend most of my time "on the road", and air! Met many members in person on various conferences (both in USA and Australia). In maintenance and reliability field for 25+ years......still enjoying this. Need to get my karma going again! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Kris, Kris, CMRP |

Is that Kris G? If so hello...
I have been off of this board for a while too. It appears that the Karma points are not functioning (or turned off) Anyway, My name is Kris and used to be on the old board in the vibration area. Currently I am an oil analyst last 3 years but I still dabble in vibration and ultrasound (about to go on IR courses). Been in the industry about 10 years now, always learning.... It is nice seeing all the familiar names. Electricpete is as prolific as ever, always nice to have his insight when he's not on eng-tips. Does Arne Lindholm hang out around here anymore? Hello To All,
My name is Rolly Angeles from the tropical country of the Philippines (Mabuhay) Means Long live. I'm 43 years old and retire early from industry and put up my own small firm on training focusing on my passion on Maintenance best practices and reliability. I have 3 wonderful kids 2 girls and one boy, my eldest is already in 2nd year college, I am happy that I found this forum to learn and share with you great people with the same interest. When I was in high school I love rock music and have 7 electric guitars as my hobby is to be like Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton, I have every single tape on rock music (No cd yet during those time 1980's) well I guess it didn't work out that well, my fingers are stiff now and hard so can't play anymore and I have to divert my hobby to other more relevant things and this is where I started my passion on studying reliability and maintenance best practices, Right now, I just take time to read, learn and teach industries, this is how I make my living now by teaching, If I dont teach then I dont eat, that simple. I take my children once in a while to the movies and have a great time specially my 7 year old boy. Lots of good and warm people on this forum. To have a place for lots of people in different parts of the world with the same interest really is a tough job, and I thank Terry for putting on this forum where we can learn from one another. I'm so glad I found you guys. I just want to end with a quote : Life is not measured by the number of breathes you make (like PM based or running hours) but by the number of times life takes your breathe away... and being with your love once are breathless moments that we do cherish most. . . . Whatever we do with our lives, the learning's just never stops . . . . . My Warm Regards to All, Rolly Angeles Reliability Consultant (That's what my id says) RSA Reliability and Maintenance Consultancy Firm (I really don't want to be called a consultant and brag about it not a big deal to me, I prefer to be called a teacher) This message has been edited.
